So here I am at Whiteman Air Force base…I haven’t met any kids yet, but the facilities are wonderful. I’m staying in the Whiteman Inn on base (not to be confused with the commercial one down the road five miles), and it’s amazing to see what people who work in the forces get put up in. The cost is only $31-35 a night to stay here, though of course you must be authorized to stay here, and the rooms they gave us anyway are super nice. It looks like a computer is provided for us downstairs, and my room is really a suite. You walk in; to the left, a kitchenette with two fridges, freezer, microwave, toaster, coffeemaker and sink, as well as a kitchen table and chairs, and then a pretty big living room with a work table, big couch with side table, a comfy chair with footstool, and a really big TV and VCR. To the right is a hallway with a big sink area, and off of it are, to the right, a nice bathroom, and to the left, a bedroom with bed, another phone (there’s one on the work table too), a few side tables, huge bureau, closet, another tv, etc…there’s also a big storage closet when you walk into the room.
So I’m pretty excited…we’ve heard that in past years people have had us over for dinner, but in case I went to walmart last night and I have enough for three meals a day here (yayyy for frozen dinner). It will be pretty healthy actually and I have even made up a fresh salad for myself.
The town outside of the air force base is pretty small, one big street, but I haven’t explored it fully yet; it’s called Knob Noster. About 12 miles away is Warrensburg, where there’s a walmart and tons of other stuff-I’m sure we’ll be hitting up at least the Applebee’s at some point. Hopefully the kids are well behaved, there’s a good number signed up (it’s pre-registration). We hear air force kids are better than army kids and navy kids, anyway, we’ll see how all that goes…we’ll be performing in a gym, because the theater space apparently isn’t air conditioned, but we’ll be fine.
